Wordpress 2.0 Kubrick Theme Problems -Solved !

Sunday, January 29th, 2006

If any of you are using the default Kubrik theme in Wordpress 2.0, you may have noted a problem. The Footer seems to be shifted - ever so slightly - to the right! It doesn’t happen in IE 6 though. I have several (test) sites all using that theme at the moment, and they all have the fault. (Not planning on sticking with it long term I might add :D )

Naturally, I went looking for a solution, and that Included posting on the forums at WordPress.org.

I quickly found one other person with the same issue (so I was relieved to see it wasn’t just me!) and then a solution appeared.

Hats off to Spencerp for providing the solution.

As usual, the difference in interpretation of CSS by different browsers is a pain. Hopefully IE 7 will be more compliant.

I must admit - an advantage of open-source software is that there is usually someone who has the solution for you :)

Wordpress 2.0 Installed and working!

Saturday, January 14th, 2006

Well, if you can see this (and I can!), then I have successfully installed/upgraded to wordpress 2.0 as promised.

I have detailed the process and the quirks on my wordpress development blog at Wetscalpel. If you haven’t tried it, give it a go. I think it was worth the “effort”.

WordPress 2.0 - Come and get it!

Bloggers jailed!

Monday, November 7th, 2005

Wow, this is serious stuff - but we knew that.

Political bloggers jailed, detained

Libya has sentenced a blogger to a year and a half in prison after he criticized the government in his online articles, according to Human Rights Watch.

It’s not just Libya as the article points out.

This goes some way to answering Robin Good’s question :- Are Blogs Credible News Sources?

Obviously, some governments are afraid that they will be treated credibly - and have taken action to stop them.

Be afraid… very afraid….

Akismet - it’s kismet!

Wednesday, October 26th, 2005

Fate indeed! There I was noting my intention to add a SPAM catcher, and there I see on Matt’s site the notification that AKISMET was available!
Well I’m gonna give it a go :-)
IF it fails there are gonna be a few red faces I guess, but seems such a good idea.
Only concern is privacy, and I hope Matt has figured out the secure aspect of all this?
GO for it!

NoFollow - DoFollow

Wednesday, October 26th, 2005

Just a quick note to my commenters. (umm both of you :-) )
I have installed the DoFollow plug-in so you get appropriate google search engine credit for posts here.
As you MAY know, WordPress 1.5.2 automatically inserts a NoFollow tag to all comment links in an effort to reduce comment spam. Not necessarily gonna work though.
Philosophically - you comment you should get the page rank IMHO.
Not alone in this I know, so - DoFollow is here.
Will also institute some decent anti-spam measures soon too.

Spammer plagiarism - what next?

Thursday, October 20th, 2005

These poor souls have been plagiarised a hundredfold by the new generation of SPLOGGERS at Blogspot.

Build A Better Blog: 16 Ways to Drive Traffic to Your Blog

There are a lot of ways to attract people to visit your blog. Patsi and I recently wrote an article outlining 16 ways to drive traffic to your blog.

It seems the Sploggers have taken some of their lessons to heart!

So far I have identified at LEAST a dozen SPLOGS (5 minutes work) that look legitimate - initially - but which have all the text from the above site. The SPLOG is then littered with hundreds of (irrelevant) images that link back to clicktrakers / advertisers, as well as circular links to other SPLOGS that are almost identical.

SO someone’s legitimate hard works has been stolen and now services their SPLOG community.

I wonder if Chris Pirrilo is aware of this NEW SPLOG type?!

How low will they stoop next time?

p.s. I haven’t linked to any of the SPLOGs on purpose - you can find them very easily if need be.
